Sales and Marketing Strategies for Flame-Retardant Coatings

Flame-retardant coatings represent a specialized opportunity in the construction market, particularly for manufacturers that can help architects, contractors, and building owners address fire-performance requirements.

The global fire-retardant coatings market was estimated at approximately $8.6 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach about $12.2 billion by 2031, according to one recent market analysis. Building and construction represents one of the industry's largest end-use segments.

These figures indicate a growing market, but success depends on more than simply selling a coating. The strongest strategy is to get involved early, help influence product specifications, and support the contractor through installation.

Architects and specifiers should be a primary focus because they can influence which products are included in project specifications. Rather than approaching architects with a traditional product sales pitch, manufacturers should provide useful technical information that helps them make informed decisions.

Product data, test reports, specifications, application requirements, substrate information, and technical assistance can make it easier for architects to consider and specify a product.

Educational content such as articles, webinars, project examples, and continuing-education presentations can also establish the manufacturer as a technical resource rather than simply another coatings supplier.

General contractors and construction managers require a different message. Their concerns often center on availability, cost, scheduling, installation, technical support, and avoiding problems during construction. Marketing should therefore emphasize how the manufacturer can help contractors successfully execute the project.

Providing product selection assistance, coverage calculations, technical support, qualified applicators, and jobsite assistance can make the coating easier to purchase and install.

Application contractors represent another important sales channel. A manufacturer can develop a network of qualified painting and specialty coating contractors who are trained to properly apply the product. A certified applicator program can provide training, technical support, marketing materials, project referrals, and recognition on the manufacturer's website. This gives application contractors another source of revenue while giving the manufacturer a larger local sales and installation network.

The opportunity becomes even greater when these three groups are connected. An architect may specify the product, a general contractor may purchase it, and an application contractor may install it.

A strong business-development program should therefore work across the entire project cycle - from identifying projects and influencing specifications to supporting procurement and installation. The goal is to create demand rather than waiting for a contractor to request a price.

Market selection is also important. Industrial facilities, warehouses, manufacturing plants, distribution centers, healthcare facilities, educational buildings, government projects, commercial buildings, and other specialized construction projects can provide opportunities for flame-retardant and fire-performance coatings.

NFPA estimates that U.S. fire departments responded to an average of approximately 1,544 warehouse structure fires each year from 2020 through 2024, resulting in about $314 million in direct property damage annually.

Statistics such as these can support educational marketing focused on fire risk and the importance of appropriate fire-performance solutions without making unsupported claims about what a particular coating can prevent.

Digital marketing should reinforce the sales effort. A strong website should provide architects and contractors with easy access to technical documents, specifications, test information, application instructions, case studies, and project assistance.

LinkedIn can be used to reach architects, engineers, contractors, project managers, estimators, and specialty contractors with educational content and project-related information.

Demonstration videos can also be effective because they allow prospects to see how the coating is applied and understand its performance characteristics.

The most effective strategy is ultimately to position the company as a fire-performance solutions partner, not simply a coating manufacturer. The message should be straightforward: help architects specify the right solution, help contractors execute the project, and help qualified applicators install it correctly.

This creates relationships at multiple levels of the construction process and increases the opportunity for repeat business.
